5-Step Thrift Checklist
1. Check the Brand & Era
Look for American denim (Levi’s, Lee, Wrangler), rare Japanese denim, and other well-known high-end brands. Vintage pieces from the ’80s, ’90s, and early 2000s often have the best quality and softest wear.
2. Inspect the Details
Check stitching, seams, rivets, and buttons. Small frays add character, but avoid major damage or cheap denim with elastane that has stretched from wear.
3. Measure the Fit
Vintage sizing can be tricky. Always measure waist, rise, and inseam — and try them on if you can. Some denim gives a little over time, but washing may shrink it back again.
4. Look Beyond Jeans
Thrift stores often stock denim jackets, vests, and chore jackets too. These “holy grail” finds can instantly upgrade any outfit and are often rarer than jeans.
5. Be Patient & Persistent
Thrifting is a treasure hunt. Visit often, dig deep, and let the perfect pair find you. It’s getting harder as thrifting grows in popularity, but there are still gems to be found.
Pro Tip: Once you snag your perfect piece of thrifted denim, wash carefully and wear it proudly — above all else, have fun showing off your unique worn-in style.
